Swim team secures historic league title

Stretford Amateur Swimming Club has stormed to a divisional title in the regional section of the National Arena Swimming League.

The club, which celebrates its 130th anniversary in 2018, secured the North West Division Two title with a dominant display in the final at Lower Broughton Leisure Centre on Saturday (9 December).

Having won the first two rounds of this year’s divisional galas, Stretford went into the final as firm favourites against teams from Lancaster, Chorley, Oswestry, Kendal and Northwich.

And they didn’t disappoint, securing the first divisional title in the club’s history by a winning margin of 60 points.

Stretford Head Coach Tom Pope said: “It was a huge result for the club. Although we’ve achieved promotion in the National Arena League before, the club has never won a divisional title. I’m so proud of this group of swimmers. The fantastic efforts they’ve been making in training are really paying off and they’ve bonded into such a strong team. It really bodes well for the future of the club and we’re really looking forward to competing in Division One next year.”
