About Us

Introducing the Club

The Club is a friendly and welcoming community sports club that swims and plays water polo at its headquarters in Stretford Sports Village (Chester Centre), Greatstone Road, Stretford, Manchester (Go to Map). It is only about 400 metres away from the ground of the world famous Manchester United football club. We are about 4 kilometres south west of the heart of the City of Manchester but we, nor Manchester United, are in Manchester – we are actually in the Trafford Metropolitan Borough Council area.

Stretford Swimming Club was founded in 1888 and has always offered the three disciplines of swimming, lifesaving and waterpolo to the local community. It has long held annual Club Championships and some of the earliest dates on the shields are from the 1920s. Stretford Swimming Club has nurtured para olympians in swimming and has had a number of water polo players in the National Team. Stretford moved to Stretford Leisure Centre, now called Stretford Sports Village, in the 1980s and continues to be a family friendly club with multiple generations of families involved with its activities. For a detailed history of the first 100 years of the club, see here.

We are still a very active club with over 200 members from all ages 6- 90+ years of age. We are affiliated with numerous associations – ASA, North West Region, Central Lancashire Swimming and Water Polo Association, Manchester and District Swimming and Water Polo Association, National Swimming League North West to name a few.
